What Recycled Fabric Means

Recycled fabric is made from recovered material — post-consumer bottles for recycled polyester, or cutting scraps and garments for recycled cotton. It reduces virgin resource use, but the claim only means something when backed by certification.

Uncertified recycled claims are a common greenwashing risk. Always ask for the certificate number and the issuing body.

GRS Certification Explained

TermMeaning
GRSGlobal Recycled Standard — tracks recycled content through the supply chain.
Recycled claimPercentage of recycled fiber in the fabric.
Chain of custodyDocumented hand-off from source to finished goods.
Social & chemical rulesMandatory along with recycled content.

A credible GRS claim requires the certificate at both the fabric mill and the finished-goods factory. We hold GRS and can show the chain of custody.

Recycled Polyester vs Recycled Cotton

  • Recycled polyester: strong, smooth, lower cost, ideal for activewear and jersey.
  • Recycled cotton: softer hand-feel, limited availability, often blended.
  • Blends (rPET plus cotton) balance cost, feel and recycled content.

How to Verify a GRS Claim

  1. Ask for the valid GRS certificate (scope plus transaction).
  2. Confirm the certified entity matches your supplier.
  3. Request the transaction certificate for your specific order.
  4. Cross-check the number on the certifier website.
A GRS certificate for the mill alone is not enough. The factory that cuts and sews must also be certified for the claim to hold on the finished garment.

Cost & MOQ Considerations

  • Recycled fiber typically costs more than virgin.
  • Minimums may be higher for certified recycled lots.
  • Demand is growing, narrowing the price gap year by year.
